the compendium of proustian madeleine moments

i have decided to record a list of things and sensory stimuli that trigger proustian memories. as a sort of remembrance and association exercise meant to amuse myself.

so.

madeleine moment # 1: maggi hot and sweet tomato chilli sauce. triggers indistinct memories of sundays in agartala and classmates' tiffins. not tasted in years. distinct flavour. glorious nose-dripping heat. reminds me of a time when i wasn't such a sucker for dessert, when i had raw cinnamon bark cravings instead of chocolate cravings, when all i wanted was spice, and more spice on my tongue and so i'd surreptitiously lick off a little bit of the sauce now and then from the fridge until mother would grow suspicious and refuse to stock it for a month. mine was a childhood of rationed delights. and so, i think i overcompensate in adulthood by gross overindulgence. tsk tsk.

associated sense memory: mother's weekend mughlai porota breakfast, consumed leisurely while watching TV or reading the newspaper, both highly disapproved by mother as activities that hindered family time and conversation, which is probably why i liked them better than sitting down around the dining table together. haha. i wonder if other children ever disliked being made to eat at the dining table.
